When to Introduce Water to Babies?

Water intake is very important for everyone. but question arises that is it too important for infants or babies? So the answer is No. Water should not be introduced to babies before 6 months. Before 6 months, babies get all the hydration from breast milk or formula milk even in hot weather.

As kidneys aren’t yet developed well in small babies , consuming water can cause their bodies to release sodium along with water. Drinking  water can leads to water intoxication. It happens when too much water dilutes the concentration of sodium in the body, disturbing the electrolyte  that can result in occurrence of some symptoms like  irritability, drowsiness, vomiting, excessive urination, low body temperature, swelling in tissues, seizure, etc. After 6 months, once solid food has been started, water can be introduced to babies in form of sips at some intervals.

Can we dilute formula with water?

There is another question by many parents that can they dilute formula with water before 6 months. Formula milk is always diluted with water but it should be strictly mixed with the required quantity of water as prescribed on boxes/tins/packages. You should not mix more water then prescribed as it will not give required nutrients to baby.
